Description
Species Overview
The Yellow Dragon Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred fancy guppy strain combining yellow coloration with the distinctive appearance associated with Dragon-type guppies. Dragon guppies are particularly recognized for the contrast between patterned or reflective body coloration and developed ornamental finnage, creating a visually complex fish rather than the more uniform appearance associated with solid-color strains.
Males typically develop the strongest coloration, pattern expression, and more elaborate finnage, while females grow larger, develop fuller bodies, and generally display more restrained coloration. Like other fancy guppies, Yellow Dragon Guppies are active, social livebearers that spend much of the day swimming, displaying, and foraging through the upper and middle portions of the aquarium.
Our Yellow Dragon Guppies are Tank Bred and available as males, females, or pairs. Their distinctive Dragon-type appearance, manageable adult size, peaceful temperament, and active behavior make them an excellent choice for planted displays, appropriately planned community aquariums, and selective guppy breeding projects.
What We Love About This Fish
Distinctive Dragon-Type Appearance: Yellow Dragon Guppies combine yellow coloration with the complex body and fin characteristics associated with Dragon-type fancy guppies.
Impressive Male Display: Mature males develop the strongest coloration and more elaborate finnage, making them especially noticeable in planted display aquariums.
Active and Highly Visible: Yellow Dragon Guppies spend much of the day swimming, foraging, and interacting throughout the upper and middle water column.
Tank-Bred Fancy Guppy: Our Yellow Dragon Guppies are Tank Bred and available as males, females, or pairs for display aquariums and selective breeding projects.
Scientific Name: Poecilia reticulata
Common Name: Yellow Dragon Guppy
Source: Tank Bred
Average Purchase Size: Approximately 1–1.5 inches; size varies by age and sex
Adult Size: Males typically reach approximately 1.5–2 inches, while females commonly reach approximately 2–2.5 inches
Care Level: Easy. Yellow Dragon Guppies are adaptable, but consistent water quality and adequate mineral content remain important for long-term health.
Temperament: Peaceful. Yellow Dragon Guppies are appropriate for planted and community aquariums with non-aggressive species that thrive under similar water conditions.
Diet: Omnivore. Offer a varied diet built around quality prepared foods and supplemented with appropriately sized live, frozen, and plant-based foods.
Social Behavior: Social and active. Yellow Dragon Guppies interact frequently with other guppies but do not form the tightly coordinated schools characteristic of many tetras and rasboras. Males regularly display and court females.
Activity Level: Active
Aquarium Level: Upper to middle water column
Minimum Aquarium Size: 10 gallons; larger aquariums provide greater water stability and more swimming space, particularly for groups and breeding populations.
Lifespan: Approximately 2–3 years, although genetics, temperature, nutrition, reproductive demands, and overall husbandry influence individual lifespan.
Aquatic Arts Tip
Yellow Dragon Guppies are adaptable, but adaptable does not mean indifferent to water quality. Stable, mineral-rich water and consistent aquarium maintenance are more important than repeatedly adjusting the aquarium to chase an exact pH or hardness number.
Recommended Water Parameters & Aquarium Requirements
Water Parameters
Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 7.0–8.2
GH: 8–18 dGH
KH: 4–12 dKH
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: Ideally maintained below 20 ppm through appropriate stocking, feeding, filtration, and regular water changes
Aquarium Requirements
Minimum Aquarium Size: 10 gallons. Larger aquariums provide greater water stability and are strongly recommended for larger groups, community setups, or aquariums where fry will be allowed to grow.
Filtration: Use reliable biological and mechanical filtration sized appropriately for the aquarium. Sponge filters are particularly useful in breeding setups because they provide biological filtration without creating dangerous intake suction for newborn fry.
Water Flow: Low to moderate. Yellow Dragon Guppies are active swimmers but do not require strong current, and excessive flow can become unnecessarily demanding for fancy guppies with developed finnage.
Oxygenation: Maintain good gas exchange through appropriate filtration, surface movement, or supplemental aeration when necessary.
Aquarium Maturity: A fully cycled aquarium is required. Yellow Dragon Guppies should never be used to cycle a new aquarium.
Plants: Highly recommended. Live plants provide cover, grazing surfaces, visual barriers, and refuge for fry while contributing to a more biologically active aquarium.
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is suitable for the fish themselves. Choose lighting intensity primarily around the requirements of the live plants being maintained.
Aquatic Arts Tip
Stable water beats a “perfect” test result. Yellow Dragon Guppies perform best in mineral-rich water with consistent chemistry. If the aquarium is already within an appropriate range, avoid unnecessary pH or hardness adjustments that can create fluctuations more stressful than the original reading.
