Description

Plant Profile

Pogostemon Sampsonii is a unique and attention-grabbing aquatic stem plant native to the tropical waterways of Thailand. Featuring narrow, spiky leaves that radiate outwards from rigid central stems in symmetrical whorls, it presents a distinct starburst texture that stands out in any aquascape layout. When grown in dense groups, it creates an eye-catching background or midground bush with fine visual depth. Moderate to fast-growing under high-tech aquarium conditions, Pogostemon Sampsonii responds exceptionally well to routine pruning, branching aggressively to form thick, lush hedges.

Key Features & Benefits

Pointed, spiky foliage creates an attention-grabbing starburst texture in background and midground zones.

Fast-branching stem habit easily forms dense, bushy hedges when routinely trimmed.

Versatile stem species that provides excellent contrast against broad-leaved green and red aquatic plants.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip the lower inch of foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.

Use fine-tip pinsettes to insert individual stems 1 to 2 inches deep into aquarium soil.

Provide medium-to-high lighting and pressurized CO2 injection; consistent liquid fertilization with essential macro and micro nutrients yields robust stem growth and prevents lower leaf loss.

Maintain stable water parameters and avoid sudden parameter swings to prevent leaf melting or stem rot.

To propagate, simply trim main stems with sharp straight shears and replant the trimmings directly into the substrate; two new shoots will sprout from the cut site on the original stem. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I transition Pogostemon Sampsonii from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into rich substrate under medium-to-high lighting and keep water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its broader land leaves and sprout slender, greenish-yellow underwater foliage. Once new shoots develop, trim away old lower growth to encourage dense branching.

2. How do I get Pogostemon Sampsonii to grow into a thick, bushy hedge?

Routine topping is key. When you trim the main stem, two or more new lateral shoots will branch out right below the cut site, effectively doubling stem density and forming a dense foliage bush over time.

3. Does Pogostemon Sampsonii require CO2 injection?

While Pogostemon Sampsonii can survive in moderate-light, low-tech setups, pressurized CO2 injection along with nutrient-rich aquasoil yields significantly tighter leaf whorls, richer green coloration, and much faster branching after pruning.
