Description

Remarks: Apistogramma cf. payaminonis has been given the D-number “D3″ by hobbyists. They are found in Colombia and were initially labeled D3, but a Peruvian fish A. cf. payaminonis was found a few years later and bears a striking resemblance. Males are yellow and light blue with pointed fin rays in the dorsal fin ending in yellow tips. Their caudal fin is lyrate with bright orange tips at the top and bottom of the tail. Females assume a typical coloration for Apistogramma in being a tan, cryptic pattern when not spawning, but bright yellow during courtship.

A sandy substrate is necessary due to their earth-eating habits. The tank should be furnished with several caves or nooks to protect and spawn in. Cichlid caves, overturned flower pots, and leaf litter work well.

Breeding is achieved by feeding live baby brine shrimp to an adult pair and providing a proper tank setup. Fry are guarded by one or both parents for several weeks. Dither fish such as small tetras and livebearers can be used to provide parents with targets to chase.
