Uses of This Medicine in Pets

Joint and muscle pain: limping after exercise, sprains and soft tissue injuries.

Pain after surgery: spay, neuter, orthopaedic and dental procedures.

Is Melonex a painkiller? Is it for fever?

Melonex is an NSAID, a pain and inflammation reliever, and yes it can also bring down fever. It does not treat the cause, so a vet should check why your pet is in pain or running a temperature first. Read about the signs of fever in dogs. Browse more dog pain relief medicines.

Use the syringe or measure that comes with the bottle. Do not use a kitchen spoon. Round to the nearest marking on the syringe and ask your vet for in-between weights.

With food: give with or just after a meal to be gentler on the stomach.

Shake well: shake the bottle every time before measuring.

Same time daily: pick one time of day and keep it.

How long: give it only for the days your vet set. Do not extend a course by yourself.

If your dog vomits within an hour: do not repeat the dose. Note the time and call your vet.

Water: keep fresh water available throughout treatment.

Melonex syrup for cats

Cats are far more sensitive to NSAIDs than dogs, and repeated dosing can cause serious kidney damage. Never use the dog dose for a cat. Use it for a cat only if a vet has prescribed it, at the exact dose, for the exact number of days they set. If your cat is in pain, see our cat pain medicine range and the guide to fever in cats, and speak to a vet first.

What Should You Do If You Miss a Dose?

Give the missed dose when you remember, unless it is close to the next dose.

If the next dose is almost due, skip the missed one and carry on.

Never give a double dose to catch up.

If several doses were missed, call your vet before restarting.

How This Medicine Works

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It lowers the body chemicals that cause pain, swelling and fever, so a sore joint or surgical wound feels better. It is the same molecule as Metacam. It relieves symptoms and does not cure the underlying problem, and it is not an antibiotic.

Side Effects in Pets

Most common: less appetite, vomiting, loose stools.

Call your vet the same day for: black or bloody stools, repeated vomiting, unusual tiredness, increased thirst or urination, yellow gums or eyes.

Allergic reaction: facial swelling, hives or breathing trouble need emergency care.

Overdose: if you think too much was given, call your vet or an emergency clinic straight away and carry the bottle.

Safety Advice

Dogs with kidney, liver or heart disease, or stomach ulcers: tell your vet before starting.

Pregnant or nursing dogs and puppies under 6 weeks: do not use unless a vet advises it.

Other NSAIDs and steroids: never give with Melonex. Your vet will tell you how long to wait between them.

Dehydrated or very old dogs: need extra monitoring.

Cats: only on a vet prescription (see above).

Birds, rabbits and other pets: doses are very different from a dog dose. Use only on advice from an exotic or avian vet.

Humans: keep out of reach of children. For animal use only.

Storage: keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. In Indian heat and monsoon humidity, close the cap tightly after every use.
